Technology
I can remember a time (that doesn't seem that long ago) when I purchased a nice new camera.....it was state of the art at the time and I can remember handling it very carefully thinking that it would last at least 5 years. That was back in the good (not so old) days when technology marched forward in a steady but predictable fashion.
But then came the computer generation and now the march of technology has developed first into a run and now into a
sprint with new technology products coming to market at a frightening speed, leading us to dispose of perfectly good technology as it becomes obsolete at an ever increasing pace.
Indeed in today's manufacturing environment it is not unusual to see generations of technology leapfrogged without even getting to market forcing manufacturing to speed up technology research even further, desperately trying to get their products to market in an ever decreasing window of opportunity.
But technology does bring with it oh so many advantages that we all too quickly take for granted. Lets go back to our humble camera for example.
The first time I laid my eyes on a digital camera was in the year 2000. The company I was working with had a very technology savvy CEO. While he was an otherwise nice person, he had one major failing. He would go out and acquire the latest and the best of technological gadgets and gizmos. If that was all he did, it would be fine. But he would bring these back to the office to ‘share’ with us. It might have seemed like sharing to him, but to the rest of us (who, by the way were all under-paid) it felt as though he were gloating!
Anyway, to get back to the topic at hand, he one day came into office with a digital camera and showed it off to us. Now, having never before seen an actual digital camera, one of the first things I did when it came into my hands was to look for the film housing. But try looking for some device like that in a digital camera which more closely resembles a block of shiny metal! Needless to say, I was perplexed much to the amusement of my colleagues.
For me that was a wake up call to open my eyes and embrace technology and all it could bring to me and why not? For example, A digital camera has so many advantages over a conventional film based camera. For one thing, a digital camera does not use film, instead, capturing the image directly onto the hard disk or a flash based memory.
Not only does this help one save on repeated costs, it also enables easy conversion and mailing of photographs in digital format.
So, with a digital camera, you no longer need printers, printing accessories or even scanners. Just connect, upload and share your photographs with your friends and loved ones.
But technology does not stop there! Using today's software technology where you once disposed of a photo that didn't make the grade you can perfect and even enhance it.
Even the amateur photographer is able to touch-up photographs during the development stage in order to highlight a few factors or even to conceal any flaws, with the omnipresence of digital image manipulation tools like Photoshop among a host of others.
A digital camera is a potent tool that can make an artist of even the most clumsy of us. Oh the beauty of modern technology.
So how do we keep pace with the dizzying advances in technology? Not all of us have the time nor inclination to constantly research what is new today (and even newer tomorrow), but instead just wish to have access to the right information when we need it so we can get a good overview of what the technology can do for our lives not necessarily how it works (we can leave that to the breed of humanity affectionately referred to as geeks).
